Agbogbo-Za festival

It marks the commemoration of the exodus of the Ewe people in the XVII th Century.

The first ritual ceremonies begin on the first Thursday in September and the climax takes place the following Saturday.

The apotheosis takes place on the 1st Saturday of September.

The oral tradition teaches us that they fled from the cruelty of the king who wanted to protect his royalty by having it surrounded by a wall ( Agbogbo ) whose length ( 14 Km ) and thickness (several meters) required significant work to the subjects.

The festival has a religious connotation: we offer the first anticipated harvests and we implore the blessing of the gods and the manes.

Agbogbo-za marks the start of the new year for the Ewe people and gives all the sons the opportunity to revitalize their traditional values and reflect on the development of the Ewe space .

The Vodous

MAMA TCHAMBA
The goddess of slaves
The goddess of freedom

She is the emotion of the woman who is suffering from slavery , who is crying, who is seeing her children beaten, who is getting raped constantly, who suffered from hanger, who loses her dignity, who has no choice but the one of the master etc...That cry call all the goddesses of the house and the country of the slaves and they come as MAMA TCHAMBA.

MAMA TCHAMBA is always with slaves and children of slaves. She is the mother who makes everything to have a better life for her children. She is the love of a mother for her children.
She is the goddess of people who lost their root. Their spirits who follow them become MAMA TCHAMBA . Those people in the country of their masters still need to do the ceremonies of their ancestors. So people who can not even remember the ceremony of their ancestors worship MAMA TCHAMBA because she represents the gods of their ancestors in that new country. She is the gracious mother.
MAMA TCHAMBA disturb the children of the slaves when they forget everything and follow the gods of the masters. Then they still have problems ans so many bad issues even if they practice well the religion of the masters. It's a call from the gracious mother to look for their root. Through her slaves or children of slaves can find their root.

But MAMA TCHAMBA disturb also masters and children of masters.
MAMA TCHAMBA gives money to her children. It's said that the slave who worship mama tchamba must have as much money as the masters.

Vodou Yi To - June - July

During the sixth and seventh months of the year, the Mami retire to Their abode under the sea to discuss how They will manifest the Divine Plan through the upcoming year.  During this time we must be most vigillant as the protections that the faithful have become accustomed to will be reduced.  It will be best that while They are gone we are at our best.  At the conclusion of Vodou Yi To, we welcome the Vodous return with divination of the incoming year, many offerings and feedings in genuine thanks for Their return, much celebration, merriment and happiness to spread love and joy within the community.  The best way to begin the New Year.

Dzawuwu-za

It is a cultural practice which is based on ancestral beliefs in the Kloto region .

It is also a party in which in ancient times was spread to the intention of the gods and the spirits of ancestors dishes prepared with the beginnings of some crops ( maize , cassava , yam ,.).

It is celebrated every year on the first Saturday in August

Ayiza

According to the history of the Ewe people , the founders of the city of Tsévié emigrating towards the south (exodus from Notsé which would go back to 1720 ) tired and deprived, decided to sow beans .

When it was time to get back on the road, the sowers protested, demanding to wait for the harvest. From there came the current name of Tsévié formed of " Tsé " (to produce) and vié (a little).

Ayiza owes its name to the bean " Ayi " and is celebrated every year on the second Saturday in August in Tsévié .
