So what do we do with all of these Trump supporters?

Nothing. For the longest time I struggled with understanding why the average citizen, who is otherwise thoughtful and considerate, would support someone whose business practices have been abysmal, whose been taken taken to court over racist housing practices, and whose first order of business as president was an act of nepotism? Like most people I deduced it could only be because Americans were okay with this type of behavior. Then I watched an episode of Spectrum during the 2020 election and I saw what the problem was. A young, millennial voter acknowledged all of the societal woes that was shredding the tapestry of our country and he said, "... all of that is downstream of the economy."
It's like a light turned on. Trump supporters aren't innately more racist, more sexist, more supporting of tyranny! They're not even stupid! They are convinced that the fix to social problems is to throw money at it. They aren't wrong, per se, they just haven't completed the thought.
Anthropologists have identified six elements that describe a culture:
Values- This used to be Religion but the scholars had to account for atheism
Language
Art
Social Stratification
Governance
Economy
They have further determined that a civilization is a complication of culture, codifying Values and Governance, requiring Art to express as Architecture and requiring Language to have a "Symbolic Expression" and adding Public Works and Cities to the list. Why does this matter? What does any of this have to do with President Donald Trump and his supporters?
It matters because it illustrates the error in their thinking. This list isn't linear but there is an order to things.
The Trump supporter believes that by improving the amount of resources generated in America by Americans we will improve the social condition of Americans. This is an expression of the capitalistic Value. It's failing is that it doesn't address question of access. If you have a billion dollars in the bank, $20 in your pocket, and no bank card you are effectively worth $20.00.
The Trump supporter doesn't recognize that Social Stratification limits access to a community's resources no matter how plentiful they may be. In most countries, stratification was enshrined in law (Governance) until the late 50's with the US having only started addressing the issue in the Early 70's and is still wrangling with the issue.
In the US, Social Stratification is based on Economic position, Gender, Sexual Orientation, Race, and Ideological identity. This is uncomfortable for the average American to acknowledge because a core American Value is individual merit, yet of the core striations of our society only two are mutable and of those two only Economic Position is demonstrable and considered good to change. Changing one's political or religious paradigm is looked at as the result of massive cognitive trauma, thus it is mutable but it's frowned upon to do so in most cases.
The Trump supporter(Ideological Identity) has concluded that improving your Economic Position will improve your social position. They do not account for the rich women, LGBTQ+ people, African American, Non Christians who are legally disenfranchised or physically harmed because of these identifiers. For the Trump supporter enough money will make these problems go away. But history suggest it doesn't.
Historically, women who exercise too much power are abused, assaulted, and abandoned. African Americans are victimized in their own homes if society deems it too good for them. Sikhs have been assaulted on multiple occasions because they were thought to be Muslims. Young gay Americans are still being subjected to "conversion therapy". These things aren't ancient history. They aren't even the province of earlier decades. All of this has happened within the last 4 years. Not as a result of the Trump presidency, but as a result of American social stratification.
In the end, the average Trump voter isn't racist, sexist, homophobic, or religiously intolerant. The average Trump voter is tribally capitalistic and will sacrifice religion for money because they believe it to be the truest indication of divine favor. Their unifying anathema is anything that impedes the flow of wealth, their only metric for success. They're not any of those horrible, deplorable things. They're Mammonites.
Good point. Your relationship with money is spiritual, while their relationship with is not.
Yes, but their relationship with their god is unhealthy. I am married to money(MAMA ƐO) but our relationship is healthy. We know our roles and so there is balance. They pursue Her without respect or wisdom.
Good assessment of the Trump voters. But, they sacrifice religion for money because they see money Is religion.
